Van Elslander Family Center

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Van Elslander Family Center is a multi-service center designed to provide services for the residents in the east side community where it is located. From child care to health care, from educational and job training programs to emergency services, the Van Elslander Family Center is a community partnership that is increasing access to basic community services.

Services at the Van Elslander Family Center

Children and Youth

J & C's Inc. offers "Baby Phonemic," a new innovative program that provides training, family education, support groups and referral services to families that suspect their child has a "Speech and Language" developmental delay. 313.393.2885

Southeast Children and Family Development Head Start operates a program for up to 65 preschoolers. 313.393.2790

Family/Pregnancy Services

The Right to Life of Michigan educational resource center offers a wide range of information and options concerning abortion and other life issues. 313.393.3001

Adoption Associates, Inc. provides comprehensive adoption services including counseling and assistance to women facing unplanned pregnancies.  Through community outreach and education, we help birth mothers make educated and loving decisions for their unborn children.

Job Training and Placement

The American Red Cross provides training for nurse assistants, home health care aides and childcare workers. 313.576.4130

Christian Legal Aid of Southeast Michigan provides people with free legal counsel and referral. Contact a nearby church or agency or call 313.393.2930 or 2931.

Emergency Services

Refugee Services of the Archdiocese of Detroit helps to resettle refugees who are newly arrived in the U.S. 313.393.3690

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store provides clothing and household articles to the general public and to those with referrals.  313.393.2920

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Food Depot provides fresh and canned food packages to those in need. 313.393.2910

Medical Services

National Rehab. Services, Inc. provides physical and occupational therapy by referral from other medical providers. 313.393.3025

St. John Health System Community Health Clinic provides free non-acute health care for the uninsured such', as physicals and preventive care with a nurse, medical assistant and a social worker for referrals. 313.567.7462

A Dental Clinic offers free dental service to adults and children lacking insurance. Cleanings and exams are done by U of D Mercy School of Dentistry. 313.567.7462

Services to the Incarcerated

Archdiocese of Detroit Criminal Justice Ministry provides religious services, one-on-one visitation and training to become volunteers in the jails and prisons. 313.393.2690

Team for Justice gives direct services to the needy families of incarcerated prisoners and advocates for the rights of those in prison. 313.393.2870

Drug Abuse Services

National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence is committed to improving community health through providing substance abuse prevention, education, training, treatment.,and advocacy. 313.393.2960
